Like alot of people my age, in the 50s, I have a large CD collection. I would like to buy a quality CD player. I don,t know if I can justify the cost. Instead, I am looking into a Ipod and storing my CD's on it in a uncompressed format. It is my understanding that a uncompressed format will have better sound quality. I would like to connect a ipod to my Onkyo 8050. I know I can buy docks that will connect directly to my 8050 audio inputs I already have a doggle connected to my 8050's USB port so I don't want to be constantly removing and installing componets in my USB port. Do I need to connect a dock to a DAC before going into my 8050. Any suggestions on hook-up or products would be helpfull. I am looking into a Ipod and storing my CD's on it in a uncompressed format. How many CDs do you have? With a lossless format, figure 3 CDs per GB. The iPod Classic will get you close to 500 CDs, but your other options are far less capacious. The other option is to rip your CDs onto your computer (which you have to do anyway, to fill your iPod), then stream your music to your Onkyo. If you already have a WiFi network, this would require only an Airport Express. You could get an iPod Touch and use Apple's Remote app to control iTunes on your computer. Whatever you do, you will not need an external DAC. Instead, I am looking into a Ipod and storing my CD's on it in a uncompressed format. It is my understanding that a uncompressed format will have better sound quality. The SQ of music that has not been lossy compressed is identical to the origional CD, all other things being equal. FLAC and Apple lossless compressed ares good - they are compressed in a way that no actual information is lost. IPods and many competitive products in general have converters and line drivers that are comparable with those in a good CD player. Also, high bitrate MP3, MP4 and AAC files are very close or equal to lossless files in scientific tests. They can allow you to get about 3 or more times music into the same space as lossless. Lossy compression has a bad rap partially because so many people do unscientific listening tests which just regenerate audiophile myths.
